Read To Me Daily Semester 3

DAY 36 OF 82

JEREMIAH 3-4:
From yesterday’s reading in Jeremiah, I highlight 1:12b, where God says,

1:12b GNT “I am watching to see that my words come true.”

In Hebrew the word ‘watching’ forms a play on words with the similar-sounding word ‘almond tree’.

Yesterday we also read Jeremiah 2:13, which is one of the most frequently quoted verses from this book. Look at it in context starting at verse 11:

Jer. 2:11 GNT No other nation has ever changed its gods,
even though they were not real.
But my people have exchanged me,
the God who has brought them honor,
for gods that can do nothing for them.
12 And so I command the sky to shake with horror,
to be amazed and astonished,
13 for my people have committed two sins:
they have turned away from me,
the spring of fresh water,
and they have dug cisterns,
cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all.

PSALM 139:
Today’s poem, Psalm 139, is quite a contrast with today’s chapters in Jeremiah! Our God searches our hearts and knows all about us. This psalm has been a great comfort to many.

JOHN 18b:
We return today to John chapter 18. Jesus knew he was walking inexorably to the cross. To me it is interesting that in Jesus’ short time with the governor of the land, he brought the focus to the concept of ‘truth’.

Let’s pray.
Lord Jesus, we thank You that even in that garden, You were watching that your words and promises would be fulfilled. Even facing the angry mob, You didn’t forget your promise to protect your disciples. In these things You show how like the Father You are, because we have read in Jeremiah that the Father also watches over his words to make sure they come true. We thank You that heaven and earth may pass away, but your word will never pass away or become invalid. We thank You that not the smallest letter or detail will fail to be fulfilled in your Word. We thank You that your promises are backed by all the honor of your name. Lord, we thank You that we so frequently see the Old and New Testaments teaching the same things. We praise You Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for the fantastic display of the unity of your Word! Today, help us to more fully trust in the reliability of your promises.
