Day 5: Dress Rehearsal
Dress Rehearsal: the final rehearsal of a live show, in which everything is done, as it would be in a real performance.
I grew up loving theater. I performed all the way through college. I loved taking a character and becoming it for a short time. But what I loved most was “dress rehearsal,” because that was what made me confident for opening night. We would be able to work out the kinks and practice until we got it. There are many days where I wish we had a dress rehearsal in life. We would be able to “practice” at a job before we decided if we liked it. Maybe we could even hang out with someone with no emotions before we called them “friend,” that way nobody ever got hurt. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a glimpse of what is coming next in your life so you could perfect it when it came to real life?
I have struggled with insecurity for years, mostly because I don’t like the unknown. In my late 20’s as I was raising my young boys and I remember journaling and asking God to “give me a sign.” I had no idea where He wanted to me serve, work, or who to grow a relationship with. I was barely surviving the laundry, and I didn’t know my next step. I was in a “waiting room,” but the Lord quickly revealed to me that it was a “preparation room.” The reality is this life is NOT a dress rehearsal. I have spent different seasons struggling, and even depressed, because I wasn’t confident in what was coming next. I truly believe I have missed some God moments because of my attitude and insecurity. God was there the whole time, wanting to show me the way.
Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever felt insecure of the unknown? Waiting doesn’t mean you are inactive, it means you are developing. The power of God is in the process, and sometimes the preparation room is the only place where we can train our minds, hearts, and souls. Your purpose in life is not to find the “next” thing to pursue or how to gain more followers. Your purpose actually has nothing to do with you and everything to do with how God can use the gifts He has given you. The waiting room is for training, so grab some snacks and Bible and get ready to learn how to use everything God has intimately woven inside you when you were in your mother’s womb.
If you focus on God and patiently prepare, the next door will open and you will be ready for whatever it has for you. Ladies, sometimes we need to focus on the people sitting with us in the waiting instead of what we are missing. The small conversations, quick smiles at the grocery store, encouraging texts can be the exact purpose God has for you today. Look up, prepare, and be ready to be developed into everything God has for you.
We don’t get to practice or perfect something before we try it. This is where we have to choose to trust God. If He showed you what the next week looked like, you wouldn’t talk to Him or trust Him because you would already “know.” Let’s ask the Lord what we need to learn and grow through during this season to help us to the next one.
Daily Prayer:
Heavenly daddy,
I pray You can help shift my mindset when I am in a season of “waiting.” Help me focus on developing into the woman You called me to be instead of the “next door” that could open. You are the door and I pray I walk right inside of Your arms through Your Word and prayer. My purpose is You, Jesus. I pray I can encourage someone that is in the waiting and remind him or her God is preparing them for great things. Thank You Jesus for every season and for being in the process, I trust that You are doing a good work in me. In Jesus’ name.
Love,
Your daughter
