John writes, in this passage, about the importance of love in action. He uses the example of Jesus. Our Messiah spent much time speaking about His love for all, but He demonstrated His love by His sacrifice on the Cross for all people enslaved to sin. All those who believe on Him are called to reflect Him by allowing His love to be poured out through them. John writes that the sacrifice that believers make in the name of Christ is love in action. Giving, sharing, comforting, praying, supporting others when it may not be convenient or comfortable. He goes on to say that this selfless action is the evidence and assurance that believers are of Christ. When believers are tempted to doubt their right standing with God, John reminds them that God is greater than our hearts. His love for His children is not dependent on whether they can carry out this love fully. John ends this passage by reminding them why they should love one another. Because God the Father and God the Son have said so. Those who have surrendered their lives to the God by making Jesus Christ the Lord of their lives will follow His commandments.

The true indicator of a Christian’s faith is not in what she says, but in how she lives her life. If people were to watch a silent movie of a random day in your life, would they see a reflection of Jesus through your actions?

PRAYER: Father God, You are the God that loves us unconditionally while demonstrating Your love for us daily. Lord, help us to reflect Your love for us through our sacrificial giving. Let our words be few, and our actions speak volumes. Lord, write Your commandments on our hearts so that they flow out of our actions. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
