A Piece of Heaven
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” -Jesus
Hell is a never-quenchable thirst, but Heaven is the most wonderful, never-ending drink that’s only more delightful with each sip. It’s every wonderful bit beyond what our human senses could ever taste, see, smell, hear, touch, or think up.
Think of the moments you’ve referred to as something like “a piece of Heaven.” Maybe it was seeing a loved one for the first time in a long while, a spiritual experience, or standing in front of breathtaking beauty. What you experienced was not just a piece of Heaven—what you experienced was the fact that Heaven has a piece of you. God put eternity in your heart, and it’s been beating for Heaven ever since.
Still, in our world of immediacy, it’s almost the norm to mistake a piece of Heaven for Heaven itself. We spend our days trying whatever it takes to get one piece, and another, still unsatisfied. This is nothing new. It’s the original human mistake of thinking we—the created—could somehow find something a little better than God, the Creator. It’s this same notion in us that crowds out the wonder of Heaven with our little pieces of earth.
Jesus was speaking directly to this tendency when He reminded us to not store up treasures on earth, but rather the kind of treasures that populate Heaven. Jesus didn’t blur the lines between Heaven and earth because He knew the difference between the two firsthand. While He was on earth, He asked us to pray to our Father who (He pointed out) “is in Heaven.” Remember what He asked us to pray? That God’s will would be “done on earth as it is in Heaven.” He acknowledged both as separate, while at the same time confirming for us that choosing Heaven starts here, on earth. Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Pray: God, I want Your will to be done in my life here on earth as it is in Heaven. I invite Your grace, Your presence, and Your Holy Spirit to replace my selfish desires. Help me to treasure on earth what You treasure in Heaven.
About this Plan
C.S. Lewis said, “Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in.’ Aim at earth and you get neither.” In other words, what you do today because of what you believe about what happens after you die could change everything, forever. Start this Life.Church Bible Plan today to accompany Pastor Craig Groeschel’s new series, One Minute After You Die.
