UNCOMMEN: Fear Not

DAY 3 OF 5

For the Love of...

If you think you and I sing the wrong words to songs from the 70s and 80s, you should hear someone try to quote the Bible on the fly. People often say, “Money is the root of all evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10 tells us, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

We’ve all seen people who have money, houses, cars, and fame take their lives. They may have been scared of losing their things,  or scared of the way they achieved it. In either scenario, what's been discovered is that money doesn't lead to contentment or happiness. Sure, there will always be a need for money to pay for necessities. But notice our verse says, “…and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Being content with what you have seems to be like telling someone to take a breath underwater. People want—out of insecurity, as a coping mechanism, greed, depression, envy and more. I know someone who has 20 of the same kind of item. They keep buying more of it as if they don’t have this certain one. Or they need this one because of some reason they have convinced themselves of. When they get home, they have the guilt of buying that item again.

Matthew 6: 19-20 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Do not let fear drive you to misplace the proper perspective on things and your ability to be content with what you have. When you remember that all you have belongs to God, you may start to rethink how you gather and appreciate what you have.

Uncommen Questions:

Do you buy things you don’t need? Why?

Is it some competitiveness with another person?

What can you do to stop this from happening in the future?

Uncommen Challenge:

I challenge you to rethink what makes you buy and want things. Before every purchase,  try to adjust your perspective and ask yourself: will this Glorify God?
