Time Alone With God

DAY 2 OF 5

Things You Can Do During Your Quiet Time

Your journal

A journal helps you keep record of your life’s journey. It is where you create a catalog of reflections and insights.  This will allow you to mark your life by writing down what you hear God say and see Him doing. You should keep your Bible and journal with you at all times. You can use the Bible app on your digital device to record your daily entries, or you can keep them in your favorite note taking app.

Your Bible

Your Bible is paramount in navigating your life spiritually, relationally, morally and financially. You need a Bible that you will have with you at all times, so select one that you love, that feels right and reads well. You have more than 50 different English Bible versions in the Bible app you are using to read this plan on your device. Open your heart before the Lord by first humbly coming before Him with words of praise and thanks. Then open His Word asking Him to speak and give you supernatural insight of what you will be reading.

Reading your Bible

There are many ways to begin learning how to have a quiet time. Two of the most prominent ways would be to read a passage in Psalms or Proverbs each day. For example, if today is the third day of the month you would read Psalms 3 or Proverbs 3. When you have a Bible book longer than thirty-one chapters, like Psalms, you can continue through the chapters in sequence over a period of weeks or months.

Another key approach to reading the scriptures daily would be reading through a book of the Bible. A good first choice might be 1 John. The reason for this is because it’s a short and practical book. Reading it will allow you to finish the book because if you read just a chapter a day you will finish it in five days. You can also choose to follow a reading plan on the Bible app, which have built-in support, notifications, and provide tabs to help remember what you are reading.

A journal, as a constant companion to your Bible, will allow you to record where your Bible reading begins and ends each day. This is especially helpful when you read only a few verses daily or you miss your quiet time for several days. Writing where you begin and end, allows you to quickly pick up where you left off. It’s also good to write down the date. This creates perspective to the time sequence of  your devotional reading, which is crucial to consistently walking with God.

Many people use devotional books in their journey with Christ. Try the reading plans of the Bible app—you can use them with your Bible, and you can record the passage you are reading, and the insights gained in your journal or in the app’s notes.
