LETTING GO
I'm not a big fan of beards. So when my son decided to grow one, I found myself constantly "suggesting" that he shave or trim it. You can imagine how thrilled he was to receive a beard trimmer for Christmas! Finally, I realized my comments were affecting our relationship.
When we nag our kids to lose weight, dress to suit our tastes, or cut their hair, what they often hear is, "You would be more acceptable and worthwhile if you looked a certain way." We may see our suggestions as a way to prevent them from experiencing rejection and hurt from others. Ironically, our comments can make them feel hurt and rejected by us.
What do you need to relinquish today to embrace your child more fully? It may be weight, hairstyle, or fashion choices. Take an honest look at why these things are important to you. Have you sacrificed your relationship with your kids by trying to get them to conform to your style?
Ask for the wisdom and strength to love your child just as they are.

Scripture
About this Plan

The purpose of this devotional is to see what God's Word has to say about the parenting challenges every parent faces. Each day includes a passage of Scripture and an application of that passage to the trials and triumphs of leading families to maturity in Christ. The devotionals are created by Parenting by Design, a Fort Worth ministry devoted to teaching parents to lead their children the way God lead His children.
