Day 3: Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?

Have you ever felt as though the resources you have are not enough to meet the challenge you are facing? Of course you have. Me too. Maybe it was a financial challenge, a relational challenge, an emotional challenge, or more. 

Jesus' disciples once had a similar experience. Jesus asks Philip, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” Andrew eventually speaks up, “There’s a young boy here with five loaves of bread and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”

We are told that Jesus asked this question because He was testing Philip, for Jesus already knew what he was going to do.

Not cool, Jesus. Not cool.

Why would Jesus ask a question when He already knew what He was going to do? It seems Jesus is not only interested in feeding the stomachs of the crowd; He is also interested in creating hunger in the hearts of His disciples. A hunger for something greater than bread.  

Jesus' miracles are never just about the miracles. That’s why He calls this miracle of multiplying the loaves and fish a sign that we need to understand (John 6:26). It points to something greater than itself. Jesus tells us what that is when He says, “I am the bread of life.”

In what area of your life do you feel as though your resources are not enough? Are you willing to bring the little you have to Christ, trusting His plan? You might just be surprised once you do: You will discover He already knew what He was going to do all along. Like the disciples, we too can bring whatever little we have placing it in Jesus’ hands trusting that He will make it more than enough no matter the challenge we are facing.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being more than enough for me today as I trust You with whatever challenges come my way today. You care so much for me that You not only will provide my daily bread but also my spiritual bread to feed my soul. Thank You for giving Your life for mine. Help me now to live for You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
