Ezekiel 9
9
The Wicked Are Slain
1Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, “Let those who have charge over the city draw near, each with a deadly weapon in his hand.” 2And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his battle-ax in his hand. #Lev. 16:4; Ezek. 10:2; Rev. 15:6One man among them was clothed with linen and had a writer’s inkhorn at his side. They went in and stood beside the bronze altar.
3Now #Ezek. 3:23; 8:4; 10:4, 18; 11:22, 23the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side; 4and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put #Ex. 12:7, 13; Ezek. 9:6; (2 Cor. 1:22; 2 Tim. 2:19); Rev. 7:2, 3; 9:4; 14:1a mark on the foreheads of the men #Ps. 119:53, 136; Jer. 13:17; Ezek. 6:11; 21:6; 2 Cor. 12:21; 2 Pet. 2:8who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”
5To the others He said in my hearing, “Go after him through the city and #Ezek. 7:9kill; #Ezek. 5:11do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity. 6#2 Chr. 36:17Utterly slay old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but #Ex. 12:23; Rev. 9:4do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and #Jer. 25:29; Amos 3:2; (Luke 12:42; 1 Pet. 4:17)begin at My sanctuary.” #Ezek. 8:11, 12, 16So they began with the elders who were before the temple. 7Then He said to them, “Defile the temple, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” And they went out and killed in the city.
8So it was, that while they were killing them, I was left alone; and I #Num. 14:5; 16:4, 22, 45; Josh. 7:6fell on my face and cried out, and said, #Ezek. 11:13; Amos 7:2–6“Ah, Lord God! Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?”
9Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and #2 Kin. 21:16; Jer. 2:34; Ezek. 8:17the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity; for they say, #Job 22:13; Ezek. 8:12‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and #Ps. 10:11; Is. 29:15the Lord does not see!’ 10And as for Me also, My #Is. 65:6; Ezek. 5:11; 7:4; 8:18eye will neither spare, nor will I have pity, but #Ezek. 11:21; Hos. 9:7I will recompense their deeds on their own head.”
11Just then, the man clothed with linen, who had the inkhorn at his side, reported back and said, “I have done as You commanded me.”
