Week 16. Day 5. 2 Kings 24-25.

These chapters describe the fall of Judah to Babylon

24:1 Babylon had conquered Assyria and was looking to conquer Egypt next, so Jehoiakim king of Judah turned his allegiance away from Egypt to Babylon. Three years later, Babylon failed to capture Egypt, which is when Jehoiakim rebelled against Babylon and again looked to Egypt for help. (Remember that Judah was on the route between these two great powers - stuck between them.)

From a human level, the exile happens because of the actions of these powerful surrounding nations. But look at 24:1-3 for God’s reason for why this happens.

24:10-17 First attack on Jerusalem (597 BC). What happens?

Some of the people are taken into exile at this point, but only a few. At this point, Jerusalem and the temple are still standing.

24:20 How is exile described?

24:20 Zedekiah rebels, leading to second attack on Jerusalem, culminating in its fall in 586 BC (this is the date in 25:8)

Ch 25 Notice how much more severe this attack on Jerusalem is:

  • v9
  • v10
  • v11

Kings could end with 25:21. What do the last couple of paragraphs after this add?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
