Day 1: Understanding the Anointing

In this 7-day devotional, we will learn how to receive and enjoy the power of God’s anointing in our lives.

Today, let’s look at the profound meaning and significance of the anointing. The Hebrew word Messiah and the Greek word Christ mean “the anointed one.” For centuries, the Jews waited for the Promised Messiah (the Anointed One). He would destroy the yoke of Satan’s oppression. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing” (Isaiah 10:27). Let’s look at some benefits of this anointing.

Divine Progress
The anointing supernaturally moves us beyond limitations that we couldn’t get beyond before. Before receiving the anointing, we were limited to our fleshly wisdom and power. But with the anointing, we have no more limitations. We can see more victories, go further, and fulfill God’s purpose when we understand and activate it through faith in the blood of Jesus.

Divine Selection and Empowerment
Anointing with oil has deep roots in Scripture, symbolizing divine selection and empowerment for a specific purpose. For example, In 1 Samuel 10:1, Samuel anoints Saul with oil, signifying Saul’s divine calling to be king over Israel. This action of anointing represents God’s choosing and equipping individuals for their specific work.

There’s something about the kiss of a prophet. Samuel took the vial of oil, poured it on Saul’s head, and kissed him. You know, this kiss was not necessarily a kiss of affection. It was a kiss of impartation. For us, it’s the kiss of God’s power. When you kiss, there’s an exchange of breath. When the prophet kisses Saul, he’s breathing the anointing into his life. “Because the Lord has anointed you to be captain over his inheritance.” God has made us to be captains and not captives!

You know that by death, there’s an inheritance given. Jesus died, and God gave His inheritance to His sons and daughters. God inaugurated the New Covenant. We have an inheritance NOW. We are joint heirs with Jesus. Why? Because when He suffered, we suffered. When God raised Him from the dead, He raised us with Him. And when He was seated, He seated us with Him at His right hand in heavenly places. Now, God wants us to be captains over our inheritance. We’re heirs of salvation and healing. Our inheritance consists of blessing, provision, joy, peace, and power.

Identification with Christ
Communion also signifies our identification with Christ in the same way the Holy Spirit anointed Jesus for His ministry on earth. Acts 10:38 speaks of Jesus, saying, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” Just as God anointed Jesus for His mission, He anointed us through our communion with Him to carry out His work in the world. This anointing empowers us to preach the gospel, heal the sick, and demonstrate God’s love and grace to others!

Spiritual Discernment and Understanding
1 Corinthians 2:12 tells us, “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.” Our spiritual senses are sharpened through communion, enabling us to discern God’s will, understand the things freely given to us, and receive His wisdom.

Victory Over the Schemes of the Enemy
As Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Supernatural Miracles
Isaiah 10:27 declares that the anointing removes burdens and yokes. Communion, a point of contact, activates the Holy Spirit’s anointing. It empowers us for divine purposes. As Samuel anointed Saul and God anointed Jesus, communion equips us for God’s calling—providing discernment, empowerment, and victory over spiritual opposition.

God’s Provision and Blessing
Psalm 23:5 says, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” This imagery of anointing signifies divine favor and empowerment through communion. As we partake in communion, we receive the overflow of God’s blessings and the anointing that breaks every yoke.

The anointing strengthens our faith and aligns us with God’s purposes. Luke 4:18–19 records Jesus’ declaration about His anointing for ministry: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” We tap into this same anointing through communion to fulfill God’s great commission together.

When we partake in communion, it reminds us of the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon our lives. 1 John 2:27 further affirms this truth. “But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you.” Through taking communion as a point of contact, we are empowered and equipped by the Holy Spirit to fulfill our unique callings and purposes in God’s kingdom.

Tomorrow, we will see how the anointing brings us the divine restoration.
