Unwavering Love
JEREMIAH 31:3
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.”
God’s love for you doesn’t fluctuate like the weather. It’s not warm and sunny one day and then cold and dreary the next. It’s not up and down, for it’s an everlasting love. Because God’s love is everlasting, it’s not based on your performance. God set His affections on you long before you ever set your affections on Him. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him” (Eph. 1:3–4).
The Lord loves you with an everlasting love. Because it’s everlasting, it is eternal. You may say, “But you don’t know the evil I’ve done, the sins I’ve committed.” To that, the Lord assures you by showing “his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). It’s true that your obedience, your performance, and your faithfulness are up and down like a yo-yo. It oscillates like the weather, hot one day and cold the next . . . but listen carefully dear believer, that’s not the way God’s love is. God’s love for you is a fixed and eternal love. It is from everlasting to everlasting, so it does not waver like yours (and mine) does.
If God’s love for you was based on anything good or bad that you have done, it would be an erratic love. But our text says it’s an everlasting love. You may be up and down, but the Lord never changes. Indeed, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb. 13:8). So take a deep breath and let your soul soak in this peace of God’s immutable, unchanging, everlasting love. Look up into the sky and see if you can see the end of it. You can’t, and neither will you be able to discover the end of God’s love: “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him” (Ps. 103:11).
Take heart, from everlasting to everlasting; you are loved by God above.
Reflect
Do you tend to think God loves you based on your performance? How so? How does this meditation change your view of the love of God for you?
Let’s Pray
O Lord, can it truly be that You love me with an everlasting love? What incredible grace and mercy! Thank You for not pointing to my performance as the basis of my acceptance with You. If Your love for me were based on my performance, it would be so unpredictable, so inconsistent, and so often nonexistent, but that’s not how You love me. You love me in Jesus—based on His perfect life. Thank You, Lord! Help me live a life that reflects the steadfast love of the Lord that never changes and whose mercies never come to an end. For Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
