DISCOVER

The living water that Jesus promised to the Samaritan woman at the well refers to the cleansing and refreshing grace that the Holy Spirit brings through a proper relationship with God. Jesus explained that He was not speaking about physical, earthly water, but about a spiritual source of refreshment and fulfillment that satisfies completely. Jesus described this water as a fountain of water "springing up" within the individual who believes.

LEARN

The woman thought only of her physical need for water and rest. Jesus took the conversation in a different direction to help her realize that she had needs that were far greater than physical thirst - needs that He could meet for all believers. He showed himself as the Messiah to a Samaritan; not a Jew, to a woman; not a man, to a sinner; not a saint. Jesus was willing to take the route that Jews would never walk. They would bypass Samaria completely by taking a longer, less direct route that crossed the Jordan River, just to avoid defilement. Jesus, in contrast, went through Sychar and entered Samaria. The route was still challenging, and He would have been worn out from His journey, but He gladly came to Samaria with the intention of meeting this weary, thirsty soul.

The woman was so excited about the news Jesus shared with her that she left her water pot at the well and went to share what she learned. She was so filled with joy from meeting the Messiah that she only had one thing on her mind: sharing the good news! Just like her, let’s be encouraged to share the gospel of Jesus with that same zeal. Also, consider praying daily for the thirsty, unreached people groups, because Jesus wants to offer them His living water.

Encountering Jesus

Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
