Pillar 5: Choices
It’s been said that we make over 30,000 decisions, or choices, a day. This means a significant part of our life weighs in the balance of who, what, when, where, why, and how, and if we make the wrong decision, there’s a cost.
I believe this is why Solomon specifically addresses this matter in the book of Proverbs, especially when he is speaking to the young men (likely teenagers and young adults) in his kingdom. He takes the time to warn them of the dangers of disobedience, and the importance of choosing not to follow the desires of their flesh over the leading of God. Solomon teaches us in Proverbs about the power of choices and how to make wise ones.
Let’s take a look at what he says:
Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe (Proverbs 2:11).
Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others (Proverbs 12:15).
There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death (Proverbs 14:12).
Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success (Proverbs 15:22).
What I realized, after exploring the book of Proverbs, is that its central theme is the idea of choosing wisely, be it in finances, friendship, reputation, or words. Choices are so important to us, and this book serves as a guide to help us take the 30,000+ we have to make each day and make them wisely.
