Soul Shepherd

Did you know that Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known passages within the Bible? Maybe you can’t recall its entirety from memory, but most recall the first verse of Psalm: “The Lord is my Shepherd. I lack nothing.” (Psalm 23:1 NIV)

David is making two incredibly important declarations in this verse:

First: The Lord is my Shepherd.

  • To declare the Lord as Shepherd meant David’s leadership of himself had been relinquished. Leadership now belonged to the Lord. When a shepherd is on duty, it is the shepherd’s responsibility to guide the sheep, while it is the sheep’s duty to listen and follow the shepherd. In order for the Lord to be your Shepherd, you must listen and follow Him, trusting that He is responsible with your soul.

Second: I lack nothing.

  • To lack nothing is to have no needs. God is willing to supply all the needs of His people (Phil. 4:19) … or sheep in this case. Sheep with a shepherd are fully dependent on the Shepherd for all of their needs: food, safety, care, and more. There is a sense of security when you trust in your Shepherd’s ability to do His job.

Have you declared the Lord as your Shepherd? When was the last time you fully trusted your Soul Shepherd? Take a few moments and write it down that moment. Thank Him today for His leadership and provision in your life.

Soul Shepherd

Is that because we don’t understand the role of a shepherd in our modern lives? In this plan, we’ll look to the Word to reflect and respond by asking Jesus to be our Soul Shepherd in these modern times.
