My truth? Maybe!

Have you heard phrases like “be true to yourself,” “live your truth,” or simply, “my truth”? They seem to be the most popular doctrine of modern culture, appearing as the moral of most stories we find online. What would God say to that? Would he agree you should look within to find truth?

Maybe. In speaking of the Gentiles who lacked the Scriptures, the apostle Paul once wrote, “The requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them” (Romans 2:15). Notice where God’s law/truth was found—their hearts. Their consciences. Their thoughts. All three of which are within.

Christian, if you are a Bible lover like me, you might instinctively recoil at the idea of “my truth.” My first reaction is to push back, pointing out the selfishness that exists in the human heart that is all too willing to twist the truth to get its way. But perhaps we should first listen, searching for common ground, finding every spot where the conscience is correct.

If we believe the Bible is the truth (John 17:17), then let’s believe this verse is true, too. That first step might lead to a conversation about the Word, where the whole truth can be found.
