Women of Worthనమూనా
Let’s journey into one of my favorite redemption stories, the woman at the well. Her story is an inspiration to the transforming power of Christ and His heart towards His daughters. Great men of scripture, including Jesus, all met their brides at wells. Moses and Zipporah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachel; Jesus went out of His way to meet the Samaritan woman at the well. In this deliberate and compassionate encounter, Jesus broke many Jewish customs: First, He engages in a public conversation with a woman, but not just any woman, a Samaritan woman. She was a second-rate citizen, viewed as mere property. However, Samaritans were a people group the Jews traditionally reviled. This woman’s foreign status put her on the same level as a dog. Dogs were not beloved as they are now; they were despised in the culture and were associated with evil and low status. Jesus asked the woman to give Him a drink.
It’s significant to understand the belief that taking a drink from her cup or water pot would have made Him ceremonially unclean. The exchange was intimate and personal, getting right to the heart of her deepest wounds. Unfortunately, this woman’s sinful life choices led her to be a social outcast. She experienced deep shame, rejection, and intense loneliness. Jesus approaches this unequally yoked, sinful woman as His own (just as He does us). His love for her provides the Great Salvation of her soul, transforming her from enemy to bride, drawing her from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His glorious light.
In building His church of believers (which He declares as His Bride), her transforming testimony evangelizes her whole village. She was of great value to Him; He gave her truth, hope, and a new identity. She was no longer a slave to her sin. As she receives Him, she steps into purpose and freedom. In the story, she leaves her waterpot, a powerful testimony to receiving His gift of Living Water.
Reflection: What do these Scriptures reveal about the character of Christ?
Recognize: What do these Scriptures reveal about you as a daughter of the King?
Respond: In light of the Lord’s transforming grace, mercy, and love, as a worthy woman of God like our sister the Samaritan woman dare to share the Good News of the Gospel with a lost soul today.
