The Heart
By Bryan Craig
SCRIPTURE:
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 NIV
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” Psalm 51:17 NIV
THOUGHT:
We recognize that we need a new heart from God. David wrote this Psalm after he had committed adultery with Bathsheba. He was broken and downhearted. He cried out desperately to God. He asked God for something only God could give…a pure heart. David also speaks to a crucial part of this heart transaction…brokenness. He calls a broken heart a sacrifice which is pleasing to God. The heart of a person, this central part of his will, his being, must be broken and given to God. This transforms a person and affects the way he thinks and acts. It helps him submit his will to the Lord, just as our Lord Jesus submitted His Will to the Father.
APPLICATION:
Have you given your heart to God? Is your heart broken and contrite? Is your heart pure? These are only questions that can be answered between you and the Lord. Spend some time meditating on these questions and writing your responses in your journal.
Perhaps you need to get honest before the Lord, confessing your sins and surrendering your will to His.
RESPONSE:
Write a prayer of submission and thankfulness to the Lord in your journal.
Think about all the areas of your life where you have been living out of your head and not out of your heart. Make a commitment to live out of the purity of your re-created heart, the heart that is connected to the Vine.
