What An Honor!
In John 19:25-27 and Matthew 20:20-29, it says that at the scene of the crucifixion, most of the disciples of Jesus have fled with the exception of John, “the disciple whom he loved”. The last person Jesus directly spoke to was John, “Behold, your mother!” For John, though being overwhelmed with grief and sorrow in the horrifying scene of the crucifixion, still must have felt honored to be given the privilege of taking care for his Master’s mother.
We may remember that it was John’s mother who had asked that her sons to be seated with Jesus at His throne. Jesus responded, “You do not know what you are asking”. How humbling those words must have been as John now watched Jesus suffer on the cross. It should have been us on that cross yet Jesus took our place. He sacrificed for us. Now, all that was asked of John was to take his Lord’s place as a son in Mary’s life. What grace and honor! How empowering to know that Jesus trusts you with what’s dear to his heart. We know from the scriptures, John was obedient to Jesus’ word and took care of Mary.
Prayer: Jesus, what an honor to serve you! You have entrusted us with a commission to preach the good news. You have entrusted us to serve the people You love and they’re dear to Your heart. We ask you to empower us for we know it is not by might, nor by power, but by Your Spirit. Fill us today, in Jesus' Name, Amen.
