Be Still...

When we are done speaking, singing, and expressing our thanksgiving and worship, silence has its place before His throne.

Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!
Psalm 46:10

God summons us in this verse to come and be like Mary, who sat at His feet. When we silence our voice, and all we can discern is the sound of our breathing, we realize that God truly does hold our breath in His hand, and nothing in this life matters except Him. And from this knowledge, He graciously aligns us to His Kingdom purposes. We remember that we were made for more. More than merely eking out a living until we draw our final breath. Our silence stills our being in the presence of Eternity.

There are promises in the verse above. First, this incredible understanding that our silence brings us into a greater depth of knowing the Lord Almighty. After thirty-seven chapters of Job and his four friends arguing, complaining, and correcting each other, when the talk was stilled – God spoke. The outcome? Job’s humble cry, “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.”

The second promise? When we participate in quiet adoration, leaning into His presence, a powerful dynamic in the spiritual realm occurs. He is exalted among the nations; He is exalted in the earth! As Dick Eastman writes, “Here we discover that being silent in God’s presence, as an act of worship, is linked to impacting the nations.”[i]

The close to our devotional is our continuing worship of the One Who loves us beyond comprehension and is worthy of all our praise, all the time.

Let’s come and delight His heart with our lives and our worship.
