Living Lessons on Forgiveness

Why forgive?

Holding onto grudges consumes tremendous amounts of energy which can result in depression. It also gives ground for the enemy to mess with our lives and can negatively affect our worship of God. (Matthew 5:23-24.) Unforgiveness breeds bitterness which affects our fellowship with one another. We choose to forgive, not only because God says to, but because lack of forgiveness harms our relationships, our mental health, and like jealousy and envy, even our physical health. (Proverbs 14:30)

Maybe you have seen the movie or play Les Misèrables. The policeman, Javert, is a prime example of what unforgiveness does to a person. Because Javert believes that all laws must be kept or punished regardless of grace and mercy, he lives a miserable life without love and relationships. In the end, when shown grace by Valjean, Javert takes his own life rather than receive or grant forgiveness. On the other hand, Valjean is a prime example of how forgiveness works when granted and received. After being forgiven, Valjean lives a life full of love. 1

Application:

Do you see the importance of forgiving so that you won’t become bitter? Consider whom you might need to forgive in order for your own mind, heart, and body to be healthy.
