Overcoming The Monster Of Grief

DAY 6 OF 7

Let Others Help

We must learn to ask for help when we are grieving. It may feel awkward at first, but keep doing it, and you’ll develop a comfort level with it. There are people all around you just waiting to be asked, who find joy and fulfillment in serving. Take advantage of the resources in your church, community programs, support groups, and the Internet. Remember, in all of this, that you are human! God does! He’s filled with compassion for you.

Along with the shock and emotional upheaval from sudden loss often comes a kind of paralysis in which everyday tasks like meal preparation, banking, legal paperwork, insurance correspondence, bill paying, grocery shopping and house cleaning are nearly impossible to perform. Just the thought of having to make any kind of a decision can cause a grieving mind to shut down. That’s where friends, family and coworkers can literally save the day. Meals provided in disposable containers, pet care, doing the laundry, writing thank you notes, mowing the grass—even answering the telephone—can go a long way to ease the burdens of a suffering soul.

You can’t be all things to all people. Remember, you yourself have legitimate needs, and it’s wrong to be too proud to ask for help! So seek help from God through prayer, meditation upon His Word, and obedience to the leading of His Holy Spirit. However, if your grieving continues to be an ongoing issue, there’s no shame in getting professional help.
