DAY TWO: ALCOHOL AND DRUGS

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” Ephesians 5:8, NIV

LISTEN

Drugs and alcohol may make you feel good, forget your worries, and gain confidence for a few hours – until the comedown or hangover leaves you feeling worse than before! Teachers and parents usually say don’t do it. Many times, friends and media say do it.

The question is, what does God say? The answer will surprise you. He says: I have something so much better for you.

LEARN

We shouldn’t abuse substances (v18). Romans 13:2 also tells us not to break the law. (Alcohol and drugs are usually against the law for teens.) God restricts us for good reasons: Substance abuse is a fruitless deed of darkness (v11). In other words, it’s something that doesn’t help you become the person God created you to be. If you are a Christian, it undermines your ability to influence other people spiritually.

It also tends to lead to all kinds of sin, including sexual sin (v18). With your perspective and self-control weakened, you say and do things that are displeasing to God and hurtful to yourself and others. God has something much better for us.

He wants us to be controlled by his Spirit rather than a substance (v18).

He offers greater satisfaction than any drink or drug can (v19). Without any bad after-effects! He doesn’t want to ruin your fun. He wants to give you real and lasting spiritual joy, not quick chemical thrills.

If you’re going to be addicted to anything, let it be to God!
