We Lift You Up
While most of the themes we have explored up until now deal with the exalted Jesus, encountering the passion of Jesus as displayed on the Cross is the most transformative experience a Christian can go through.
The triumph of Jesus over all sin and death begins in the Garden of Eden. The judgement of God against the deceptive serpent who lures humanity into the curse of sin was that though he would pierce the heel of the promised Man, this Hero would crush the deceptive serpent forever.
Though we know that Jesus would overcome the power of evil through His death and resurrection, we must hold in prayerful consideration the weight He bore. The hour of eternal victory finds its own genesis in His death.
This is such good news for us. It means that, in Christ, we are liberated from the power of the serpent. We have been seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). We have been given the authority of Christ to be victorious over the power of sin. Romans 8 speaks of our new identity as victorious children of God. We are children because the Spirit dwells in us. We are victorious because the same Jesus who crushed the head of the serpent through His death and resurrection is busy crushing Satan underneath our feet (Romans 16:20).
Reflect on your own walk with the Lord. Where do you notice you are still struggling with certain sinful habits? Where do you notice a need for Jesus to come and crush the power of sin in your life? In prayer, submit these things to God. Ask Him to, through His Spirit, empower you to be victorious in these areas. Then, declare the following over yourself: “I am seated with Christ in heavenly places. I am more than a conqueror through Him who loves me. I am victorious over the sin in my life through the Holy Spirit who dwells within me. Jesus has won the victory for me on the Cross. I am free.”

ShofarBand is a South African worship and songwriting collective. In January 2024, we released our live album, Welcome Home. This plan is based on those songs, telling the story of a God who is both transcendent and intimate, both high above and near to us. May this plan and these songs enlarge our view of the love and holiness of God, creating space for encounters with His Holy Spirit.
