But God ...

Two of the best words you’ll ever hear are “but God.” Why? Because we can get ourselves into all kinds of sticky messes and impossible situations. But God can do impossible things—and He often does to save His people. Just think about it:

  • Daniel’s enemies had him thrown into a lions’ den. But God sent His angel to shut the lions’ mouths to keep Daniel safe (Daniel 6).
  • Joseph’s brothers were so jealous of him that they sold him to be a slave in Egypt. But God used their evil plans to save the lives of many people, including Joseph’s brothers (Genesis 50:20).
  • Joshua stared up at the mighty, impossible-to-tear-down walls of Jericho and wondered what to do. But God gave him an unusual battle plan that sent those walls tumbling down with a stroll, a trumpet blast, and a shout (Joshua 6).

Hungry lions, evil plans, a mighty wall? Impossible! But God did the impossible.

The greatest example of “but God” is the one that He offers to each of us. You see, we mess up and sin all the time. Every single one of us. Sometimes by accident, and sometimes on purpose. That sin makes it impossible for us to be with Him. But God sent Jesus to take away our sins so that we could be close to God again (Romans 6:23).

Forgiveness for sins and life in heaven forever? Sounds impossible! But God made the impossible possible.

Devotion

Heavenly Father, when my troubles seem impossible. I will trust that You have a "but God" answer waiting for me. Amen.
