"L is for Leaders"

Your leaders are perhaps the most frequently overlooked group when it comes to rounding out the ole prayer list, but there has never been a group that needed your prayers more. The pastors or priests of your church, the managers and administrators of your company, the elected leaders of your state and nation: those entrusted to set the course, the tone, the mission – these men and women desperately need your prayers!

“Prayers for what?” you may ask.

First and foremost, pray that God will grant your leaders wisdom. Without wise leadership, any nation (or institution, business, church, et al) will fail. (Proverbs 11:14)

Second, pray that your leaders are willing to accept wise counsel and the Lord’s guidance. While we, as Christians, may understand “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Psalm 111:10), we must realize that not every leader ascribes to this belief – or, for that matter, even understands its meaning. That is why God places godly men and women, like you and I, in these leaders’ midst. (Proverbs 19:20-21)

Third, whenever and wherever possible, let your leaders know that you are praying for them. Furthermore, pray that God gives you occasion to speak or correspond with your leaders about the prayers you have lifted up on their behalf. Even among non-believers, it is edifying and humbling to know that the godly are praying for them. It pleases God, too. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

The prayers of the righteous are powerful indeed. (James 5:16) It is fitting, therefore, that we should wield that spiritual power on behalf – and to the betterment – of those who wield earthly power over us.

One of the greatest struggles many Christians face has nothing to do with the avoidance or rejection of any one sin, but rather with the neglect of intentional, meaningful prayer. Setting aside the time to pray can be a challenge. What’s more, making sure to pray the right way and for the right reasons (Matthew 6:5-18) can be just as challenging. “Being P.R.A.Y.E.R.F.U.L.” is designed with such challenges in mind.
