The Messy Table (Part 2): A 7-Day Bible Plan For Womenமாதிரி
Rachel Ricker
Purpose In Pain
My husband and I love our careers, being parents, and investing in relationships with others. With our full and active schedule, it takes a village to accomplish everything. Since I’m an “on-the-go” keeper of our schedule, I was surprised when God gave me the word “action” as a focus for 2018.
“Hope can be the catalyst for change, but actions are what get us there,” was the sermon quote God used to speak “action” into my heart. I wanted to deepen my relationship with God, be more intentional and present at home, improve my health, and grow as a leader for my team. God reminded me that while these are great desires, hoping to achieve these goals would point me in the right direction, but only action would get me there.
I started the year strong but it came to a screeching halt on January 12th when I broke my wrist and elbow. After surgery, I was left with a new normal. A long road of recovery was in my future, and I would need assistance with almost everything. Our village of family and friends cooked meals and helped me get around without the use of my dominant arm. My amazing husband even fixed my hair, put on my earrings, and did 97% of all parenting.
Eight weeks after surgery, my arm was still barely moving. I questioned God because this is the exact opposite of “action.” While our culture applauds strength and independence, God showed me how prideful I was. I didn’t want to need people. I wrestled with God and allowed my frustration and confusion to stop me in my spiritual progress. However, His patient, gentle spirit met me right in the middle of my pity party, and He continues to meet me where I am.
Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.” God has reminded me that there is purpose in the pain. His ways are higher than my ways, and this season will allow me to flex different muscles and draw closer to Him in unique ways.
Whether it’s a debilitating injury or illness, lost job, ended relationship, or other life event that shakes up your “normal”, please remember that God is with you and will give you strength to get through it. Ask for help, seek God, and allow Him to use the pain for His purpose.
Table Questions:
1. What area of your life do you need to surrender to God?
2. What painful experience have you endured that God wants to use?
3. What good things might God be calling you to say “no” to in order for you to say “yes” to His best?
