7 Days With the Sword and the SpiritMfano
The Gift That’s Just for You
All it takes is one Christmas with small children to discover individual gifts matter. Sure, certain presents, few and far between, work equally well for a two-year-old and a nine-year-old. Who doesn’t like that giant tin of assorted popcorn that’s only available during the holidays? But a few months after the stockings and lights come down, it will be the tailored and personal gifts they still reach for—the presents that seem to speak to who they are as individuals. The artsy six-year-old will still be decorating the world with her art supplies, the football fan will still be sleeping with his beloved Wilson, and the young readers will still be poring over their stack of new favorite books.
When it comes to spiritual gifts, our Father knows just how to bless us—and just how to bless the church. That’s why he gives us gifts according to his wisdom and knowledge. While one person might receive the gift of teaching, another has the gift of healing. Someone may get the gift of supernatural faith while another receives the gift of prophecy. And of course, some people receive a combination of gifts; others receive one gift for a season and then grow to wield another gift at a different time. The Lord is infinitely creative when it comes to how he blesses his children.
Spiritual gifts are never impersonal. The God who formed you in the womb has always known what gifts would complement your talents, skills, and experiences, and it brings him joy to see his kids discover their place and fulfill their purpose in the fellowship of believers.
These gifts, when taken together and used according to their design, are for everyone’s good. That is why Paul, in 1 Corinthians, describes Christians with their spiritual gifts as unique parts of one body. The eye helps the foot know where to walk; the heart supplies blood to the fingers and toes. All parts are essential; not one is wasted.
Have you unwrapped your gifts? Do you know how the Spirit has empowered you? If you’ve never discovered your spiritual gifts as a child of God, don’t waste any more time. Seek the Lord and ask him to reveal how he’s blessed you. Your brothers and sisters need you to use your gifts. The days are getting darker, and time is of the essence.
God of every good thing, thank you for the spiritual gifts you’ve given me. Help me to walk in each one.

Every Christian is called to live by God’s Word and walk in his Spirit. In the pages of the Bible, God reveals his good heart to us, and through the Holy Spirit, he gives us his very presence so we never have to walk alone. In this seven-day reading plan, John Greco invites you to draw near to the Lord as you encounter the sword and the Spirit.
