You Know Me

It goes without saying that the sacrifices and accomplishments of motherhood often go unnoticed and without applause. There’s no award for holding onto your sanity and patience on the 7th night of staying up with a sick baby. There’s no audience to cheer you on for the endless rounds of laundry you completed in a single week.

The daily ins and outs of being a mom can often leave us feeling isolated and unseen. Yet how quickly do we forget the most important audience of One who sees all!

Psalm 139 explores the all-present and all-knowing nature of God. Every action we make, every thought we possess, and every word we speak is known to God. Everywhere we go, God is there! As David puts it,

“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. (Psalm 139:7-10)

God sees you. He sees every sacrifice you make. He sees every act of love.

Now, the all-knowing, all-present nature of God might not always be a comforting thought. Maybe we’re not proud of how we’ve handled aspects of our current season as a mom. Maybe we feel the weight of our failures. Maybe we worry God is disappointed with us.

In the heaviness of our shame, Jesus lifts our faces and speaks grace over us. The Gospel declares that no matter what we’ve done, we have a perfect standing before God in Christ! In Him, we are unconditionally loved and adored.

It is because David is secure in the love of God that he can declare, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well (Psalm 139:14).” David goes on to relish in the reality that God’s thoughts for him are more than the grains of sand on the shore. He expresses his confidence in the expansive and infinite love his Creator has for him.

Not only does God see you in everything, but he also loves you in everything. Does your soul know this very well? Can you confidently declare the message of Psalm 139 to be true about yourself? As the lyrics of “You Know Me” sing, can your heart declare:

Father God, I praise you

Your works are wonderful

I am loved so deeply

I know it in my soul

You are always seen. You are always loved.

Pray for your heart: Take a moment to pray to God and ask him to give you a deeper awareness of his presence and love for you.

Pray for your child: Take a moment to pray that your child would grow to know the love and adoration their Creator has for them.

Rest: Finally, spend a few quiet moments at rest with God, meditating on his truth:

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
