A Reminder That God Will ProvideMfano
Jesus is the Bread of Life
By Rev. Patrick Feldhus
“I am the Bread of Life,” Jesus told them. “The one who comes to me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)
We all know how important it is to eat and drink. Our bodies need food and water to survive. Go one day without food and water and your body will suffer. The hunger pains and the dehydration cramping can leave you in rough shape. There is only one sure way to end the pain—eat food and drink water. But there is one problem with this—we can never be completely satisfied.
No matter what we eat or drink, we will need to do it repeatedly. The cycle never ends.
Jesus uses this concept in spiritual matters. There is a deep hunger and thirst every person deals with on a spiritual level. But what causes this spiritual hunger and thirst? When we miss God’s demands for perfection, it causes a deep-seated hunger and thirst that we cannot satisfy. We try to feed ourselves with positive thoughts, and we try to drink in our own good works, but the guilt remains. Our sins and our attempts to fix them cannot satisfy the spiritual hunger and thirst that will lead to eternal death.
But all hope is not lost! Look at the words Jesus uses, “I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Jesus is the only one who can give food that offers life to the dead!
Jesus is the only one who can satisfy the spiritual thirst welling up in each one of us! He is the Bread of Life. Turn to Jesus when sin and its guilt cause you to hunger and thirst and he will completely satisfy your need. Can you imagine the price of such a meal? It cost Jesus his life so that he can offer it to you for free! This is the love Christ has for you. Eat and drink it up.
Prayer: Jesus, you are the Bread of Life. Fill us with forgiveness and let us drink it up every day! Help us turn to you for the food and drink that cannot spoil. Do not let us take this food and drink for granted.
Give us opportunities to share you with others so that they too can be completely satisfied. In your name, we pray. Amen.
