The Gift: Advent Bible PlanMfano
Nothin But You
“I see a lot of window shopping at a store
I talk about the Lord, and then I buy some more
But that don’t fill the gaps
It never has before
Get way too attached
To things that we cannot afford
This Christmas I got my knees to the floor
With my arms wide open
Lord rock me to my core, yeah
What’s the point of holding on to things that fade away
I’d rather have you, Jesus forever
You gon’ reign”
Sneakers get dirty and cars lose their value the moment you drive them off the lot. We know material things can’t satisfy us and, despite knowing the truth, we deal with it by trying to obtain more things. Celebrating Christmas time is an opportunity to step back and see this cycle for what it truly is—we’re grasping after the wind.
We have a god-sized hole in our hearts that material things will never fill. However, they are filling up our lives, our homes, and our landfills. There isn’t anything wrong with liking nice things. In fact, at times, things may be used as a means to communicate the value of a relationship we have with another. But when things become ultimate and our lives are full of chasing after things instead of chasing after God, we don’t have room to experience true love.
We hope today’s study will help you see we have a choice in the way we relate to things. We can use this day to open our arms to the real love of Christ and the fellowship of others, or we can busy ourselves trying to find what we can hold in our hands for only a brief moment.
Prayer: God help me see the eternal value of your presence. God help me to not be distracted by things this holiday season.
