[1 John Series 2] Real Life Walks In The Light

SIKU 6 YA 7

How do you walk in the light?

We all want to walk in the light. The question is, how do we do it? You can begin by asking yourself three things. The first question would be, what goes into your eyes? Jesus said that the eye is the lamp of the body and that if your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But He also said that if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So what are you looking at? What’s going into your eyes? The eye is the lamp of the body. If it’s good, your whole body will be filled with light.

The second question to help us walk in the light is, who do you run around with? Who are you hanging out with? Paul asks us not to deceive ourselves, bad company corrupts good morals. I know we think this verse is for somebody else. We think, “But I’m the designated driver. I just hang out with all the partiers. They do all that, but I don’t do it.” Just wait. If you keep going that direction too far, too long, you’re going to end up like that.

Bad company corrupts good morals because we create a circle of an alternate reality where our sin is normalized. We make ourselves believe everybody is doing it and we deceive ourselves. This is not to say that you shouldn’t hang out with unbelievers. We, as believers, ought to hang out with people who do bad stuff. But we shouldn’t be a part of that. Do you see the difference? Choose your Friday night friends carefully. And while you are at it, there is no shame in hanging out a week or two with your family.

And the third question that will help us to walk in the light is, what do you love the most? Don’t love the world or the things that belong to the world. Because if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. What do we love? We love Jesus. We love His Word. We love God. If we love the light, we are going to walk in the light, and it is going to be attractive for us to walk in the light. Walking in the darkness brings self-deception and lies. Walking in the light brings fellowship with others and God. It should be really easy to answer which one we want.
