Rock Versus Sand

Every day, we are in the process of building a life from the things we do and say, how we spend our time, and with whom we spend it. Just as is the case with a house, there is one essential component that keeps everything else in our life steady: the foundation. It prevents it all from falling apart. Our foun­dation, what we build our lives on, has to be solid, not something that flattens or washes away when life’s storms come, leaving us empty.

Jesus compares two diverse foundations—rock and sand—to emphasize how we should ground our own lives. Those who build their lives on a relationship with Jesus Christ are building on rock, which withstands the storms of life. Those who build their lives on anything other than Christ are building on sand, which shifts and sinks and doesn’t last through the hard times.

Actions, accomplishments, and other efforts without the right foundation aren’t enough to keep us steady all the time. Having a relationship with God will change our hearts, making us like Him and giving us His strength and hope, a community of believers to help carry us, and other tools we need to withstand the hardest of situations. Our lives will be hit by many storms, but only one founda­tion will always remain steadfast, regardless of the size of the storm: Jesus Christ.
