Who Is God? Exploring the Attributes of God

DAG 1 AV 5

Who Is God?

I have a few close friends in my life who are very special to me. We know each other well. We have spent time with each other's families. We know each other's likes and dislikes. We cherish each other's company. Why? The answer is because we have developed a relationship. It has grown over time into something special.

The same goes for our relationship with God. The more time we spend with Him, the more we learn about Him. We can do this by reading His Word and speaking to Him through prayer.

James 4:8a (NLT) tells us, "Come close to God, and God will come close to you." For us to know God, He has to make Himself known. His is self-revelation. "They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them." Romans 1:19 (NLT)

So, who is God?

He is self-existent, self-sufficient, and in need of nothing. There is only one God. The Triune God exists eternally in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is just, righteous, holy, Savior, eternal, faithful, unchanging, true, light, spirit, and so on. Although we can personally know the truth about God from scripture, we will never know God exhaustively. Our comprehension of Him will always be limited. The more we spend time in His Word, the more we learn about His attributes. His attributes prove we can have hope, trust, and confidence in His unfailing character when life plunges us into tough times. God won't fail because He can't fail.

Reflect:

What images or thoughts come to mind when you ponder the question, "Who is God?"

How might your interactions with others, daily decisions, and attitude toward challenges reflect the deeper understanding of who God is?
