THE FLAWLESS EXAMPLE
WORD
I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. - John 13:15
THOUGHT
Immediately following the washing of his disciple’s feet, Jesus spoke these words. The theme of this verse, of course, is to embrace the glorious, fruitful ministry of service to God, submit ourselves to his will, and live a life in service to others. These words of Christ contain far-reaching implications.
We are to follow the example of Christ in all aspects of life. He demonstrated how to live in honor of the Father in heaven, and—upon Christ’s resurrection, ascension, and sending of the Holy Spirit—Jesus provided us with the ability to do so.
When we attempt to “do as Christ has done to us,” one of the hardest ways is in extending forgiveness in the same fashion as Jesus. Believers have no option but to forgive as Christ forgave; he made it clear that if we desire to be forgiven, we must, in turn, forgive (Matt. 6:14–15). Yes, this is a principle that seems easier said than done, but it’s certainly not impossible—Christ led the way for us as our victorious example.
PRAYER
Lord, I pray for your grace, power, and wisdom to proceed forward in this day. I ask that your Holy Spirit would guide me to walk as you walk, love as you love, and forgive as you forgive. Amen.
Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
