Do Not Worry
When my sons were growing up, one of their VHS tapes (remember those?) that would often play in our house had a song that went, “I cast all my cares upon you. I lay every burden down at your feet, and anytime I don’t know what to do, I will cast all my cares upon you.” Looking back, that song definitely will make your throat choke up, but, in reality, those simple words are exactly what God wants us to do: Cast your cares upon Him. However, our human nature is to be proud and self-reliant, and having the humility to do so takes practice.
I have seen the effects of worry and stress at my practice in almost epic proportions. Because of food choices, there is the stress created by a hectic and over-committed lifestyle. Stress compounds the problems with your heart; not only can it cause your body to become acid, but it can also elevate cortisol, which is secreted by your adrenal glands in times of emergency. This can lead to increased fluid retention and high blood pressure. The best way to lower your stress level is by learning to say, “No”. Stop doing everything you are asked to do. It is time for a rest. Also, plan your meals in advance with plenty of vegetables that will not raise your blood sugar, so you will not be rushed and buy unhealthy processed foods. Lastly, cast your cares upon the Lord, and ask Him what areas of your life need to be put on pause to rest your heart and health.
