Traffic Signs and Your Marriage - Part 1Smakprov
According to Proverbs 10:9, “The one who lives with integrity lives securely, but whoever perverts his ways will be found out.” We have the choice to live with integrity, or to disregard the rules and signs around us.
Think about traffic signs: We pass them every day. Sometimes we read and obey them and sometimes we do not. They are there to protect, to guide, to warn, and to bring order. Order on the roads is certainly something we want! 1 Corinthians 14:40 affirms that it is good and right for things to be done in an orderly way.
We want every other driver on the roads and highways to abide by them. Yet, on the other hand, we want a little flexibility with these signs when it comes to ourselves. Traffic signs are everywhere. I just do not want them to get in my way.
When we look at marriage, we can apply that same selfish lens if we’re not careful. There are strong cultural norms that tell us marriage should fulfill us or make us happy. But these aren’t the biblical purposes of marriage. God’s way for marriage is counter-cultural. It’s more about serving your spouse than being served or fulfilled. It’s a reflection of His unconditional love.
So what can His word tell us about how to navigate our marriage? Let’s look at the signs Scripture gives us about His idea of marriage. Applying God’s ways to our marriage is wise and will help our marriage to thrive. Proverbs 19 exhorts us to, “Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise later in life.” As we heed God’s direction, our marriage grows in unity and love.
So think about it, if there were traffic signs in your marriage, would you read and obey them, or ignore them? Would you want your spouse to follow them to the letter?
Over the next few days, we are going to look at traffic signs and ask, “What do these traffic signs mean if we apply them to marriage?” Join me. It’s going to be a ride!
Today’s Challenge:
1. What does integrity look like in your life? Do you live with high integrity?
2. What are some of the biblical purposes of marriage?
3. What would “traffic signs” in your marriage look like?
