30 Devotions For Youth Leaders

DAY 17 OF 30

Before The Ovations

The program started at 7:30. Inside a college theater Taylor University did its best to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Stephen S. Bedi, its retiring Provost.

The program was loaded with warmth and testified to the academic, spiritual, organizational and personal qualities Dr. Bedi exemplified. Two and a half hours after the opening piano selections, the benediction concluded.

It was long, but fitting night.

As the tributes mounted, my mind reflected on the deeply personal way Dr. Bedi had shaped my own family. Nine years earlier he instilled his wisdom, insights, and values in my son Andrew, a senior at Taylor.

As I listened to the accolades and accomplishments, they built on a singular and seemingly selfish platform – “You took care of my son.”

I laughed and clapped and stood in honor at the right moments, but I couldn’t shake the knowledge that while I was miles away, while my voice was muted and my values obscured... Dr. Bedi took care of my son.

Then, in sensed the Heavenly Father whisper in simplem reflective tones –
Before the grand accomplishments
Before the acquisition of knowledge
Before the accolades of peers
Before ovations

He simply wants to know if I have taken care of His Son.

Our first effort did not go well. We rejected, ignored, maligned and abandoned God’s Son. But now, in light of His considerable mercy God graciously gives us another chance..

Redeemed, reconciled, and restored I am commissioned to take care of His Son... in my soul, in my family, and in my public and private moments.

Is it possible that much like me, God will first measure my legacy by whether or not I have taken care of His Son?

Tonight I heard the answer.

Before the ovations...I must make much of Jesus.
