Authority in Earthly Rulers
What we are discussing today is a challenging topic. Regardless of your political party, some of us have found ourselves or witnessed someone we love in an argument regarding politics. Whatever platform you support, the Bible defines how we should regard our governing authorities. While it’s true that not everyone in government is following God, He has indeed placed everyone where they should be. Paul tells us, therefore, that we are to submit to the government (Titus 3:1) and governing authorities (Romans 13:1-2). We are supposed to respect our governing officials and the law.
We also know there are countries where it is illegal to be a Christian. It’s important to note that Jesus reigns over all the Earth. We follow His laws first. If we are in a position where the government’s law and God’s law conflict, then God’s law is what we must follow. For example, Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den because he broke the law. He knew he was being told to stop praying, but he threw the windows open for all to see and did it anyway. However, this is a special scenario, and as mentioned previously, we are called to honor those in government and respect the laws placed before us.
It is essential, therefore, to know God’s Word, get to know Him, and spend time in godly community. We must submit to authority, pray for them, and do what is right.
