Reasonable DoubtUzorak
As we conclude this devotional, I want to leave you with a couple more nuggets from Thomas's example. I suggest that Thomas is probably more accurately described as an “Inquisitive Thomas.” What do you mean by this, Chae? Inquisitive means curious. Remember John 14:6 when Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…”
Thomas’s question provoked Jesus to drop that revelation. Without Thomas's inquiry, we would not have this famous passage of scripture. This reassures us that our own questions and doubts can lead to deeper understanding.
Secondly, going back to John 20, where Jesus shows himself to Thomas, Jesus provides us with a blessing for believers today. In verse 29, Jesus says, “Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed. But let me tell you, there is a special blessing for those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
This blessing is for believers who were not there to see the risen Savior. It's a testament to our faith and a source of great value and blessing. Understanding this is important as we continue on this faith journey.
I hope this devotional has helped you see that doubt isn’t always bad. Oswald Chambers said, “Doubt is not always a sign that a man is wrong; it may be a sign that he is thinking.” Mark Buchanan stated, “Thomas doubted, not to excuse his unbelief, but to establish robust belief.”
So, I encourage you to consider your pursuit of Jesus amid your questions and doubts. You are not alone in this journey; your doubts do not diminish your faith. They are a part of it, and God welcomes them. It is reasonable to have some doubts or questions. But I believe God can and will transition us from doubting to total dependence on Him.
