Being God’s child and heir

“The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be My son.’” (Revelation 21:6-7)

Those who overcome may share in all the blessings God has prepared. A new heaven and a new earth. Living water in abundance. The end of all sorrow and mourning. And best of all: a personal, intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe.

Both promises in this verse belong together, as also expressed in Romans 8:16-17. “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.”

This reasoning sounds logical. And at the same time, it remains a miracle. That the holy God wants to see us as His children. That He wants to shower us with goodness. That’s not exactly what we humans deserve. It would have been understandable if God had destroyed all humanity and created something else, something better. But no. The Lord God loves us. He wants to remove evil from us and give us a new beginning. He is connected to us with an unbreakable bond of love.

If you are connected to God by faith, you are His child. What does that mean concretely in your life? And how is your situation now different from the future of which today’s Bible verse speaks?
