Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

DAY 1 OF 7

Grow as a Disciple of Christ by Praying for Your Pastor

Prayer is a powerful ministry that is integral to our growth as Christians. It is through prayer that we connect with God, seek His guidance, and find strength for our daily lives. As disciples of Christ, we are called to pray for one another, and one of the first people on our prayer list should be our pastor. Our pastors play a crucial role in our spiritual growth and the health of our church, and they need our prayers to sustain them in their demanding and often exhausting ministry.

The work of a pastor is never done. Pastors are on call 24/7, ready to respond to the needs of their congregation at any time. They must prepare sermons every week, often spending countless hours studying and seeking God’s word to deliver a message that will nourish the souls of their flock. This alone is a tremendous responsibility, but it is only a fraction of what pastors do.

In addition to sermon preparation, pastors are subject to criticism each week. From the style of their preaching to their decisions in church leadership, pastors often find themselves navigating a sea of opinions and expectations. The expectations church members have of their pastor can often be unreasonable, expecting them to be present at every event, visit every sick member, counsel every troubled soul, and see to countless other needs, performing multiple roles simultaneously.

No pastor is perfect, and their struggles are real. They face the same challenges, temptations, and hardships as everyone else, yet they must often shoulder these burdens in isolation. The pressures of ministry can lead to burnout, discouragement, and even a crisis of faith if not supported by the prayers and encouragement of their congregation.

As you pray for your pastor, you are not only lifting up an individual but also strengthening the entire church. When a pastor is spiritually and emotionally fortified by the prayers of their congregation, they can lead more effectively and with greater joy. This, in turn, strengthens the church’s witness to the world. A church united in prayer for its leaders becomes a powerful testimony of God’s love and faithfulness.

Praying for your pastor could be one of the most important acts of discipleship you do. It is a tangible way to show your love and support for the person God has placed in your church to shepherd His flock. As you lift your pastor in prayer, ask God to grant them wisdom, strength, and grace. Pray for their protection against discouragement and burnout. Ask God to bless their families and give them times of rest and renewal.

In doing so, you are not only helping to bear their burdens but also growing in your faith and commitment to Christ. Your prayers can make a significant difference in the life of your pastor and the health of your church. So, make it a priority to pray for your pastor regularly, and watch how God uses your prayers to bless and strengthen His church.

Day 2

About this Plan

Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

From Acts 2 to Revelation 3, Scripture focuses on God’s work through the local church. Indeed, the local church is God’s 'plan A' for His mission on Earth, and He didn’t give us a 'plan B'. If we truly want to make a difference in this world, we will do so joyfully through our local church by serving others and serving the world.
