Heart in the Bible

DAN 3 OD 5

The Contrite and Humble Heart

In Psalm 51, David expresses his deep repentance after his sin with Bathsheba. He acknowledges that God is not pleased with external sacrifices alone but with a contrite and humble heart (Lev). A broken heart is one that recognizes its own fragility and sin, turning to God for mercy and forgiveness.

God values a contrite heart because it demonstrates a true understanding of our need for His grace. When we acknowledge our inability to live righteously by our own merits, we make room for God to work in our lives. A contrite heart is the first step towards true spiritual transformation.

Humility is also a crucial aspect of a contrite heart. Recognizing our dependence on God frees us from pride and self-sufficiency, allowing us to approach Him with sincerity and devotion. When we humble ourselves before God, He exalts and strengthens us, enabling us to live according to His purposes.

Challenge: Examine your heart and identify areas where pride and self-sufficiency may be hindering your full dependence on God. Pray for a contrite and humble heart, willing to be shaped by Him.

Prayer: Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of Your grace. Break my heart of pride and self-sufficiency, and give me a contrite and humble spirit. Help me to depend completely on You and seek Your mercy in all areas of my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
