DAN 2 OD 7

Day 2 - Ps Rachel Pickersgill

Thanksgiving

We often think of thanksgiving as something we do when we are in a ‘good’ season - a season of blessing and breakthrough. However throughout the book of Psalms and particularly Psalm 136 we are called to give thanks, to offer a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name!

Life gets busy, our minds are distracted and through that we become forgetful… forgetful of who God is, forgetful of what God has done for us and forgetful that He has freed us.

Psalm 136 starts by commanding us to give thanks to the Lord - three times - the first nine verses remind our souls of who God is… He is good, the God of gods, the Lords of lords, He made the heavens, and the earth, and for the sun to rule by night. As we give thanks for WHO God is, it puts our mind and soul in its place… we are reminded HE IS GOD.

Then our soul is ready to remember what God has done for us. As King David gives thanks that God set the Israelites free and made a way for them, we should give thanks for all God has done for us.

When we give thanks it changes our heart posture! We are reminded that His love endures forever, His mercy endures forever, His loving kindness endures forever. When our heart posture changes it may not change our circumstance, but it changes us. It changes us to see our circumstance through God’s eyes.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are a good God, You are the Lord of lords, the King of kings, You are God almighty. Thank You God that Your wisdom is greater than mine. Thank You that You are faithful. Thank You that You are the Creator of the universe. Thank You for <insert something personal you are thankful for>. Thank You for rescuing me, for setting me free. Lord, I give thanks to You the God of heaven.
