Mentoring Lessons- Stewardship

DAN 3 OD 5

Who Do You Invest In?

How do you determine who to invest your time and energy into as leaders?**

I often traveled on trains or planes over vast distances to meet individuals recommended by others as excellent sports leaders.

Sometimes it became obvious within minutes of meeting them that the person wasn't right–maybe the wrong chemistry or attitude for the sport movement. A lot of time and energy was invested in a face-to-face meeting without success.

On one occasion, I flew to a new country and waited in a hotel room for the contact to arrive. The person never came.

In one large country, a friend and I traveled to 12 cities and towns, meeting men and women recommended as possible pioneers to start serving sports opportunities.

Few leaders were suitable. So much wasted time! It was tiring and frustrating.

We realized that talking on the phone was the first stage in seeing if someone was suitable. It was a low investment of time and energy. When we found potential leaders with the right chemistry, we could then visit them face to face.

Video chat technologies allow us to "see" a person and have a conversation almost equal to being together. This can be a good investment before meeting face to face.

Scripture to Ponder–Ephesians 5:16

These are evil times, so make every minute count.

Key Lesson

You have the same amount of time as everyone else. How you use technology can save you time and money in finding who to invest your time in.
