Disciple: A Deep Dive on What It Means to Follow JesusUzorak
Down For The Cause? G.
Story time! Suppose that you are a research scientist who discovered the cure for cancer and you’ve told everyone about it. As a result, the lives of millions would be spared. You would probably be called “The Great Hero of Mankind;” a very responsible individual concerned for the welfare of others.
Suppose, however, you told no one of your discovery. How would you describe a person who discovered the cure and did not tell anyone about it?
Jesus Christ has His own purpose and His purpose for us. Based in John 17, Jesus' main concern is to glorify the Father. He gave glory to the Father by accomplishing the work the Father gave Him, that is to seek and save the lost.
After His death and resurrection, before His ascension, Jesus entrusted us to make disciples. This is found in Matthew 28:18-20. This passage is commonly called the Great Commission. Though the Great Commission was initially given to the apostles and the disciples who where there at that time, it's also the same command given to us. Parts of the passage, "go and make disciples", go hand in hand with "teach them everything I have commanded you".
What do you think would happen if this command was given only for Jesus' disciples in the first century?
God's plan in helping fulfill the Great Commission involves his people, followers of Jesus Christ. That same pattern from Matthew 28 is seen in 2 Timothy 2:2. Paul wrote to Timothy through a letter, commanding Timothy to teach God's word to faithful men who would be able to teach others also.
This plan in helping fulfill the Great Commission is what we call spiritual multiplication. Spiritual multiplication is defined as "winning someone to Christ, and teaching him to win and disciple others in such a way that they can also win and disciple others."
So what's expected of you in relation to the Great Commission? Win and disciple others. What's the role of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit empowers you and enables you to be His witness throughout the world.
A witness is someone who testifies about something he has seen or experienced personally. He is called upon to speak the truth. The Holy Spirit enables you to be a witness for Christ.
As you are called to help fulfill the Great Commission by making disciples, remember that the Holy Spirit is responsible of convicting the world of sin, and convicting people of their need for Christ.
So even before you go out to share the Gospel, God is preparing people.
