Letters to My Daughter

DAN 5 OD 6

Day 5: Friendship with God

My Daughter,

I miss you and look forward to seeing you soon. Today I want to bring a topic up that you won’t hear about much in church.

You know very well that there are many people who desire to follow God. Jesus had many people that followed Him, heard Him speak, and watched Him do miracles.Yet, there is a difference between a follower and a friend.

James 2:23 says that Abraham was a friend of God. What did this friendship result in? A blessed lineage that Abram thought he would never have.

But, do you remember the story of Abraham? How he took Isaac up to the mountain when God asked him to sacrifice his son? (Genesis 22). You can only imagine what Abraham was thinking. But, Abraham obeyed.

Remember: Friendship with God requires that we trust and obey even when you don’t understand.

“You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

John 15:14

Friendship with God has many benefits. He desires friends, people He can speak to, laugh with and enjoy their company. He likes an intimate relationship way more than a stagnant, religious one. In a friendship, you keep your heart open, even during pain and misunderstanding.

God will always want to be your friend. Yes, He is God. Just like I’ll always be your Dad, but as you get older, our friendship will grow too. That is what it is like with God. So hold His hand, keep your heart open, and enjoy God like you would a friend that you would say anything to. He won't mind being stretched at times to be in that relationship.

Love you much,

Dad
