The Light Shines in the Darkness

DAY 18 OF 31

God’s timing

“When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’” (John 2:3-4)

Jesus’ mother Mary was present at the wedding when they ran out of wine. She told her Son about this problem, and warned the servants to do whatever He would tell them to do. Apparently, she believed that Jesus could do a miracle to save the situation.

However, Jesus did not take action upon Mary’s announcement. He just told her: “My hour has not yet come”. This phrase is repeated several times in John’s book, mostly referring to the moment when Jesus would suffer and die in humanity’s place. As long as his “hour” was not yet there, people could not arrest Him. They could not alter God’s timing or do anything against God’s will. In a similar way, Mary could not tell Jesus when to perform a miracle or when to reveal his identity as the Messiah. She had no influence on Him. He is sovereign.

When talking about the end of the world, Jesus even said: “Concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come” (Mark 13:32-33).

Do you trust God’s timing is always the best?
