Trust Me

DAN 21 OD 33

God is Bigger Than the Boogie Man

Read: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Think: My husband and I both enjoy music, so when our son was born we naturally began to play all kinds of songs for him. The Veggie Tales song “God is Bigger Than the Boogie Man” came up in the song que, and it made me think how relatable this song is not only to kids, but to adults as well.

The “Boogie Man” might look different for each person; for me the Boogie Man tends to be the loss of control and fears of inadequacy. These worries creep stealthily into my thoughts, and I’m suddenly faced with wondering what to do with them. I don’t want to live hiding from my own Boogie Man, especially when I have a Heavenly Father who will “take all of my anxiety because He cares for me” (1 Peter 5:7). God can shoulder those thoughts. I just need to come to Him and ask. As Junior Asparagus sings in the song, “I know that God's the biggest and He's watching all the while. So when I get scared I'll think of Him, and close my eyes and smile!”

This is God’s promise to me and to you: He will guard our hearts and minds. He will listen to our requests. He promises that He has overcome the world so we shall not fear what we cannot control. God overshadows the Boogie Man with His sovereignty and His power, even when we feel anxious and worried.

Apply: What daily practices can remind you that God is bigger than your fears?

Pray: God, thank you for being a God who hears our prayers when we feel worried or anxious. Thank you for knowing our hearts and for loving us so much to share your peace with us. Remind us of your sovereignty and allow us to relinquish control to you. We love you and thank you. In Jesus name, Amen.
