Day 3: Workout as Worship
What comes to your mind when you think about a fighter jet?
If you’ve ever been to a professional sporting event and experienced a flyover, you know it’s possibly one of the most awe-inspiring things that happen in sports. There’s nothing like a stadium filled with anxious spectators who, as the national anthem concludes, burst into excitement as the boom of fighter jets explodes over the stadium. It’s not only visually breathtaking, but you feel the roar deep in your bones as the jets’ sound shakes your chest. In that moment, the fans can’t help but let out a collective “WHOAAAA!” in awe of what they have just seen, heard, and felt.
Contrast that riveting moment with this quote from A.W. Tozer:
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
So, what comes to your mind when you think about God?
I fear too often we do not take the time to stand in awe of God and acknowledge who He is. It’s like hearing the fighter jets rip over the stadium and deciding to sit down, throw in some headphones, and scroll Facebook. We completely miss out!
Take a few passes at reading this list of God’s attributes. Meditate on them:
- Creator of all things including the sun, moon, and stars, including the earth, you, and me (Genesis 1:1-27)
- Sovereign and supreme with all things under His command (Colossians 1:16–17)
- Just and merciful despite the human race completely turning our back on Him (Ephesians 2:4-5)
- Holy beyond all that we can comprehend (Isaiah 42:1-4)
- Loving and full of grace, enough to come and rescue and redeem through the death of His one and only Son (Psalm 103:8)
- The all-powerful King who will ultimately redeem heaven and earth so we can be with Him forever (Daniel 7:13-14)
Our minds should be blown reading that list. It makes a flyover look like a child’s play. And as Christians who have experienced these blessings, we should be moved to the only appropriate response there is- WORSHIP.
The Psalms are filled with responses of awe and gratitude to God’s greatness:
- Psalm 95:6 “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!”
- Psalm 145:3 “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.”
- Psalm 103:1 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!”
Is this your response to who God is?
What would it look like if we applied this attitude to our time of working out? What if we attacked our workout with the attitude in Psalm 103:1: “with all that is within us.” Let’s explore this application together and practice worshiping Him with every breath during today’s workout!
